On Monday, May 12, a major earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, jolted southwestern China's Sichuan Province. Hundreds of aftershocks followed in the same area. The quake destroyed thousands buildings in the area, as well as infrastructure like communication networks and electrical towers.

Thousands of people died or are missing, and more than 270,000 were injured. The earthquake left an estimated five million people homeless. Many schools were destroyed, including one that had at least 900 students in it. This earthquake is the worst natural disaster to hit China in 30 years

China Earthquake Relief

Hundreds of items including ancient Chinese coins, stamps, antiques, art and local gift certificates will be on silent auction from 7-9 p.m. on June 12 at China Town Restaurant.  The event, held exactly one month after the May 12 earthquake in China that killed more than 69,127 people and left more than 4.5 million people homeless, is a fundraiser for the American Red Cross’s humanitarian relief work in the region.

Sponsor China Town Restaurant is still accepting auction items and gift cards, as well as corporate and individual donations.  All checks should be payable to the American Red Cross for its China Earthquake Relief Fund.  Every dollar received will go to the American Red Cross for relief efforts.
